Investigation of sabotage incident in the Baltic Sea

Published 27 January 2025

The Swedish Security Service is conducting a preliminary investigation on the circumstances surrounding a suspected case of sabotage on a communications cable that runs between Sweden and Latvia in the Baltic Sea. The offence currently being investigated is gross sabotage.

Within the framework of the preliminary investigation, several measures have been taken, for instance, a vessel has been seized that is suspected to have carried out the sabotage.

The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Swedish Security Service, as this may concern a seriuos crime which, at least to some extent, may target Swedish interests. A criminal investigation into this matter is being headed by a prosecutor at the Swedish National Security Unit.

The Swedish Security Service is closely cooperating with several other authorities to investigate the circumstances around the incidents in the Baltic Sea. These authorities include the Swedish Coast Guard, the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Police Authority.
