National and international cooperation efforts to ensure the safety and security of the Malmö Forum

The Malmö International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism, Remember – ReAct, will take place on 13 October 2021. Our Service is working intensively to make threat assessments and take appropriate protective measures to ensure the safety and security of the Malmö Forum.

Since the spring of 2019, our Service has been planning for the Malmö Forum, taking place on 13 October 2021, in close cooperation with the Swedish Police Authority and the Government Offices of Sweden, and with other national as well as international partners.

“We are making joint efforts to ensure the safety and security of the Malmö Forum,” says Susanna Trehörning, Deputy Operation Commander of the Swedish Security Service.

The remit of our Service in this regard is to protect the central government. This means that our Service is in charge of and decides on the overall design of dignitary protection in association with the Malmö Forum.

“We are used to managing the security at large-scale visits by foreign dignitaries, and there are well-established procedures for this. Because of the size of the Malmö Forum, practically all parts of our Service are involved in this work,” says Susanna Trehörning.

Our Service will be assisted by close protection officers from the Danish and Norwegian security services during the Malmö Forum. This cooperation takes place under the Prüm Council Decision (2008/615/JHA).

“Our Service has particularly close cooperation with the Nordic security services. Such assistance enhances our Service’s operational capabilities, especially regarding the close protection of dignitaries during the Malmö Forum,” says Susanna Trehörning.

The Malmö Forum will take place on Wednesday 13 October 2021, and numerous heads of state and government are expected to attend. Prime Minister Stefen Löfven will host the Malmö Forum.

Our Service is continuously making threat assessments and monitoring developments in the violent extremist environments.

“The theme of the Malmö Forum could be of interest to the violent extremist environments, and we are closely monitoring this situation by collecting information regionally, nationally and internationally, which we process and analyse to design suitable protective measures”, says Susanna Trehörning.
