The defendant charged with the attack in central Stockholm on 7 April 2017 was sentenced to life imprisonment and expulsion by the Stockholm District Court on 7 June 2018. He has, among a series of crimes, been found guilty of terrorist offence.
On Friday 7 April 2017 at 14:53, a truck was driven into a crowd of people on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm. The Swedish Security Service handled the case as a completed terrorist attack from an early stage. The defendant was arrested shortly after the attack and has been remanded in custody since then. After the attack, the Swedish Security Service and the Swedish Police Authority jointly decided that the investigation would be handled by the police. The National Security Unit of the Swedish Prosecution Authority has been in charge of the judicial inquiry.
In its judgement, the court rules that the defendant is guilty of terrorist offence by murder in five cases and by devastation endangering the public. The court has also concluded that the defendant is guilty of attempted terrorist offence by attempted murder in 119 cases. Finally, the court has found the defendant guilty of creating danger to another person in 24 cases.
The penalty has been set to life imprisonment and expulsion.
The judgement of the District Court may be appealed to the Court of Appeal.
